The right of access to information is an important human right, necessary for the enjoyment of other human rights.

The right to information is essential for transparent and accountable government. The right of access to information makes possible the public involvement in formulating social policies and in the decision-making processes of governance

The right to information can only be effectively exercised and implemented on the basis of laws, regulating this right in accordance with international standards

 


Categories

Each year since 2003 on the Right to Know Day Access to Information Programme organizes a ceremony to present freedom of information awards in seven categories.

Since 2010, in view of the December 2008 amendments to the APIA which introduced an obligation for online publication of information, an award for The Best Web Site With Regard to the APIA would not be presented.

The criteria for the web site category are incorporated in the criteria for the category Institution, Which Has Most Efficiently Organized the Provision of Public Information.

Positive awards (Golden Key awards)

Institution, which has most efficiently organized the provision of public information

Best journalist story related to the access to information right


Non-governmental organization, which has most actively exersized its access to information right

Citizen, who has most actively used the APIA

Anti- awards

Golden Padlock for an institution, which does not observe its obligations under the APIA and violates citizens’ rights under the APIA

Tied Key for the most absurd and funniest administrative decision related to an access to information request
